Windhoek — Reho Falcons moved a step closer to the MTC Division One title after their runaway victory over a hapless Walvis Bay Rugby Club in one of the quarterfinals played in Windhoek last weekend.
Falcons' second strings dispatched their coastal opponents by 62 points to 19 in a one sided quarterfinal match at the Hage Geingob Stadium, on Saturday.
The Rehobothers opened the floodgates with a try by eighth man Milando "Jakkals" Titus and Gert de Waal (flank), Wayne Beukes (prop) and Gordon Slamet (wing)'s further tries in the first half. Winger Alroy "Wange" Diergaardt made no mistake from the conversions to gift the Falcons a healthy lead (28 - 0).
Walvis Bay narrowed the deficit with a try by fullback Quinton Simon which was duly converted by scrumhalf Gerrie Pretorius (28 - 7). Andy Engelbrecht extended his team's margin with an opportunistic try and Diergaardt's educated white boot returned the compliment (35 - 7).
Pretorius scored his team's second try but the scrumhalf failed to convert his own try and the score remained at 35 - 12. Flyhalf Hano van Wyk sliced through the out of sorts Walvis Bay defence before seeing off Slamet for his second try of the match with Diergaardt making it six out of six (42 - 12)
After the break, Pretorius was in the thick of things again with an individual try and the talented flyhalf dusted himself off and sent the oval ball neatly between the posts from the conversion (42 - 19) At the other end, Diergaardt pushed his tally to 17 on the day with a well executed try but the winger failed to convert his own try (47 - 19). Titus made it 52 - 19 with his second try. However, "Wange" seemed to had forgotten his shooting boots in the change room after the break.
With time ticking by, Neville Vries intercepted the ball and ran almost half the length of the field before touching down under the post (57 - 19). Wange's white boot failed him for the umpteenth time as the ball hit the upright before going astray.
Van Wyk put the final nail in Wavis Bay's coffin when he dived in the corner to give his team an insurmountable lead of 62 - 19. Jakkals took over the responsibility but his attempt was way off target. Final score: Reho Falcons 62 - 19 Walvis Bay.
In other quarterfinal matches, Windhoek Rugby Club defeated Wanderers by 20 points to 16 and Western Suburbs easily waltzed past Otjiwarongo with the scoreboard reading 42 -12 after the final whistle. Mariental completed the entries for the semifinal berths after seeing off fellow Southerners Keetmanshoop by 27 points to 15.
