The president of the Nigerian Red Cross, Chief Rochas Okorocha,at the weekend enjoined the Rotary Club of Abuja and other humanitarian service organisations to come to the aid of the displaced Bakassi residents who are presently undergoing destitution and deprivation.
According to him, the Nigerian Red Cross would partner with the Rotary Club of Abuja to seek ways to better the lives of the returnees.
Okorocha, who made the call in Abuja at the installation of the 25th president of the Rotary Club of Abuja,Somadina Johnson Anene, said "I am here to dramatise the good work of humanitarian service and to propose my organisation's partnership with the Rotary Club.
"Life is meaningless without touching the lives of others who have no access to food, shelter and education.
I urge the new president of the Rotary club and his board members to continue with the good work of humanitarian assistance of the past executive," Okorocha said.
On the issue of the Niger Delta, the former presidential candidate pointed out that the problems in the Niger Delta are for the entire country which require assistance from all Nigerians and, so, must be tacked by collective resolve and action.
Also, in his contribution at the ceremony, Senator Yisa Braimoh cautioned members of the club whose intention was not to engage in humanitarian service but to feather their caps.
"In the past, the entire goal of the Rotary Club was to render humanitarian service and not for selfish reasons.
"But, now, I tell you, about 20 per cent of Rotarians joined the club to have access to international travels and to promote their businesses," Braimoh said.
In his acceptance speech, the new president, Mr Somadina Anene said the programme of his administration would be to better the lives of the needy.
"Since the justification of the existence of Rotary is the provision of selfless service, my administration would focus on education and safe drinking water in FCT," Anene added.
