Nairobi — Transport minister Chirau Mwakwere on Sunday said he will have the final word on who becomes Kenya Ports Authority managing director.
The minister told Coast leaders to stop debate on the matter. He said those debating on the issue "are simply wasting their time".
He denied claims that he had sacked former MD Abdalla Mwaruwa saying he had sent him on leave pending retirement in December.
Mr Mwakwere said he would go for the most qualified applicant for top parastatal jobs, adding that he went for the best person for the post of Kenya Maritime Authority chief when he chose Mrs Nancy Karigithu.
The minister was speaking during a Party of National Unity (PNU) recruitment awareness exercise at the Aga Khan Sports Club in Mombasa.
The meeting was attended by ministers George Saitoti, Beth Mugo, Mohamed Yusuf Haji and Noah Wekesa; assistant minister Ndiritu Miriithi, MPs George Nyamweya and Abdul Bahari Ali and PNU executive director Jasper Nyaboga.
Mr Mwakwere made the remarks as some Coast MPs reiterated their demands that the KPA job should go to a person from the region.
The leaders were speaking at a fundraising meeting in Kinango constituency.
Kaloleni MP Kazungu Kambi said the port should be managed by a person from the region who understands the needs of the residents.
Wundanyi's Thomas Mwadeghu wondered why other sectors were not being considered of national interest compared to the port.
Mr Masoud Mwahima of Likoni said that problems facing the region were better solved by local people.
