Nigeria: Minister Orders Testing of New Road Technology

The Minister of Transport, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, has directed officials of her ministry to carry out random sampling test on the suitability of new road building technology being introduced into the country's construction industry.

The minister who gave this directive over the weekend after a presentation by a delegation from Messrs Friedrich Steck &Co, on the planned introduction of Underbold Unique Building Technology to the Nigerian construction industry, noted that the country's several geographical zones with differing climatic and soil types, informed the need for random sampling test.

According to the minister, President Umaru Yar'Adua was committed to finding creative ways of increasing the durability of federal roads at reduced construction cost, to cope with the pressure of hauling high tonnage of cargoes.

While expressing optimism for the introduction of the railway system to relieve the roads of their current burden, Mrs. Alison-Madueke, directed her officials to work out detailed programme for carrying out the test.

In his remarks, managing director of Messrs Friedrich Steck, Mr. Friedrich Steck affirmed that Underbold was a unique road construction technology which offers special recipe for the roads.
