The 8th edition of the Governor's of Lagos Tennis Championship kicked off yesterday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
Though, no matches were played in the courts yesterday. All the preliminary documentations of registration of players and sign in, would be done by Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) in conjunction with the International Tennis Federation (ITF)'s. This would be with the supervisor, South African Martin Oosthuysen and his assistant, as well as the secretariat of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
Secretary-general of the NTF, Olusola Luke said that all arrangements have been concluded to ensure that the Oceanic Bank sponsored tennis futures begins without hitches.
He revealed that the ITF would be given some Nigerian players wild cards to join Emmanuel Sunday and Shehu Lawal who are already listed in Main Draw, which serves off on Monday.
He said that players like Candy Idoko and others have applied for the concession, saying that the federation will formalise the discussion on the wild card with the supervisor latest today.
Most of the players registered for the tourney are coming in order to acclimatise ahead of the competition. Some of them who have not hit town will however come on the weekend.
From the ranking on the entry list on the ITF website, Boy Westerhof from Holland, who won the first leg of the 7th edition of the Governor's Cup last December, will be the tournament's top seed in the men's singles. He is ranked No. 297, while Szatmari Agnes from Romania will be the top seed in the women's singles. She is ranked No. 215.
At least 30 players are on the entry list of the men's singles, while the women have 39 players.
