Uganda: Team Falls to Angola

Kampala — Uganda exhibited their best defensive tactics but could not get past Angola in the last classification match of the Africa U-18 Girls Junior Championship last Friday in Tunisia.

Unlike in the previous games, Uganda had a slow start losing the opening two quarters 9-21 and 5-14 respectively. Though the defensive play was commendable, the Angolans proved too strong winning the match in the end 52-36. At the back of another loss to Mozambique (33-97) to Mozambique, Wednesday, the Ugandan team will return with no victory from open play.

The only victory recorded by the seven-man team was a 20-00 walkover Zimbabwe, who failed to turn up for the tournament. "The team made the highest number of attempts but the conversion rate was so low. The opponents were more skilled and played full court press that overwhelmed our girls," Joseph Manono, who traveled with the team as a referee said of the Angola game.

But for a team that had shaky preparations and made the trip at the last minute due to lack of funds, the Ugandan girls shouldn't be too disappointed.

"It's a good experience for the girls. In a few years to come, they will be able to conquer the region," Manano added. Fuba president Ambrose Tashobya led the team.

Uganda's selected results

Uganda 33-97 Mozambique

Zimbabwe 00-20 Uganda

Angola 52-36 Uganda

Tunisia 77-38 Uganda
