Uganda Rugby Cranes quickly shook off the disappointment of failing to progress to the Main Cup of the Prinsloo Nakuru by winning the second tier competition, the Plate league at Nakuru Athletics Club on Oginga Odinga Road yesterday.
Having finished third in Pool F on Saturday, the ruggers immediately showed that they meant business by thumping Jomo Kenyatta University of Advanced Technology (JKUAT) 45-0 in the Plate final, much to the appreciation of hundreds.
It was raining tries for the team playing in their final warm up tournament prior to embarking on the International Rugby Board (IRB) Sevens Rugby World Cup (RWC) qualifiers in Tunisia later this month.
Veteran Robert Sseguya contributed two tries while Jonathan Bishop Onen, Michael Wokorach, Richard Lumu, Joel Anguyo and Brian Kikawa touched once apiece to ensure that the game was a 'walk in the park'. Chris Lubanga converted five of the tries.
National 7s Coach John Musoke was pleased at the end of a grueling two-day contest. "We have tested what was done in training (for three weeks). Most of theses young players had to endure insults from the fans which is part of the learning curve," Musoke told Daily Monitor after the final whistle.
the ruggers who are vying for places on the Tunisia-bound team, easily dispatched a Blakblad (select side from Kenyatta University ) 46-0 in the semi-finals courtesy a hat trick of tries from a rampaging Onen.
Sseguya scored twice as did Wokorach, Lubanga and Anguyo with a try each. Lubanga added two conversions to his points while Ronny Lutakome also perfectly kicked between the posts.
In the quarterfinals, Musoke's had to dig deep after a 12-12 halftime stalemate to defeat a resilient United States International University (USIU) 31-12. Each of Lumu, Onen, Timothy Mudoola, Sseguya and Anguyo scored a try with the latter two converting once each. k off a disappointing opening day
