A non governmental security body, the Security Watch Africa has given former Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, Liberian President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Ghanaian Vice President Aliu Mahama, and Nigeria's Deputy Inspector General of Police Uba Ringim golden star awards for their roles in keeping peace in Africa.
Annan received the golden star award for peace and stability in Africa while Johnson-Sirleaf got the award for distinguished leadership in Africa. Mahama received the award for development and stability in West Africa and Ringim bagged the star award for distinguished service-police in Nigeria. Others in same category were the Ghana's Minister of Interior Dr. Kwame Addor Kufuor who received the award for national security management and the Chief of Staff to the Bayelsa State Governor, Samuel Ogbuku who got the award for crises management.
Chairman, Board of Trustees, Security Watch Africa Award, Dr. Ahmadu Abubakar said the essence of honouring the recipients was in recognition of the their contribution in the maintenance of security, which is the most vital aspect for survival of all societies.
Those who got awards in governance are Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, the best governor on rural heath care delivery, Zamfara State Governor Mahmud Shinkafi, the best governor on food security, Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, the best governor on security matters and conflict resolution as well as the Akwa Ibom State Governor Goodswill Akpabio, the best safety conscious governor.
However, recipients in the security agencies category are the Nigeria Immigration Service, best technology compliance security agency in Nigeria, Nigeria Police Force, most developmental conscious security agency in Nigeria and the Nigerian Army, most improved security agency in Nigeria. Others include Bauchi State Prison Command, the best prison command North, Federal Capital Territory Police Command, best crime busting police command North, Lagos State Police Command, best police state command North West, Katsina State National Security and Civil Defence Corps Command, best civil defence command North, NSCDC Rivers State Command, best civil defence command South as well as Zone 7 Police Command FCT, best zonal command.
