Ghana: New Billing System for SSNIT Contributors

Stephen Odoi-Larbi

13 October 2008

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has instituted a new billing system to contributors of the scheme, to allow them to pay and stay current on their account.

Under the new billing system, contributors would be provided with an estimated social security amount that each has to pay monthly, to ensure the smooth operations of the Scheme.

The objective of the initiative, according to the Director-General of SSNIT, Mr. Kwasi Osei, at a breakfast meeting with Chief Executive Officers of various organizations in Accra, was to enhance the operations of the Scheme.

The initiative by SSNIT is one of its numerous programmes, designed to address its challenges. According to the Director-General, for the programme to be successful, all workers of organisations need to be registered with a valid social security number, with their organisations providing up-to-date records of employees contributing to the Scheme, regularly or on a monthly basis.

He said lack of accurate data was hampering the operations of the Scheme; a situation, he said, needed the support of stakeholders under the Scheme.

He gave an instance, where in 2005, 2006 and 2007, his outfit recorded 18%, 10% and 12% of inaccurate data of all the contributions submitted.

SSNIT, as part of the initiative embarked upon, would be the issuing of statement of accounts to contributors on an annual basis, for them to have thorough knowledge about their contributions.

Another initiative embarked upon the SSNIT, is the age 54+ scheme. This scheme enables SSNIT to clean up all its information for members aged 54+ and above, in order to minimize the delays it often encounters in the processing of claims for contributors.

The Director-General, desirous of improving the operations of his outfit, called on all organisations to support the cause of the Social Security Scheme, to enable it provide quality service to its contributors.
