Kampala — INVESTIGATIONS into claims that Geofffrey Ekanya, the Tororo municipality MP, was compromised during the Nakasero Market saga probe will start this week.
Ekanya chairs the local government accounts committee which investigated the Nakasero Market wrangle between the vendors and Kampala businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba.
In March this year, Kampala MP Erias Lukwago petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, demanding that Ekanya be investigated for allegedly holding secret meetings with Kahinda Otafiire, the local government minister, during the investigation.
Lukwago said Ekanya also held secret meetings with Ali Kayanja, the vendors' chairman and Ruth Kijjambu, the Kampala City Council town clerk.
He said the trio agreed to sub-lease the market to Sheila Investments, which belongs to Basajjabalaba.
Asuman Kiyingi (Bugabula), the chairman of the parliamentary committee on rules and privileges, yesterday said they would also investigate Lukwago's conduct.
"Ekanya had also asked Parliament to investigate Lukwago for divulging the committee report to the vendors," he said.
The committee which investigated the Nakasero Market saga said although fraud and illegalities were discovered during the probe, the Government should wait for the court ruling on the matter.
Lukwago also wrote a report in which he said Otafiire should have ensured that relevant laws were followed to enhance transparency and accountability in the lease of the market.
