Zimbabwe: Miss Tourism Harare Crowned

14 October 2008

Harare — TWENTY-year-old Vanessa Sibanda was on Saturday night crowned Miss Tourism Harare at a poorly attended ceremony that was held at the Rainbow Towers' main auditorium.

The model beat 19 other contestants to book a berth in the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe national finals to be held in the capital later this year.

Hilda Mabuse (17) and Tendai Rukwava (20) emerged first and second princesses respectively while ravishing Senzeni Moyo (22) settled for Miss Personality.

But the night belonged to Vanessa who gave the paltry crowd a rare treat on the ramp.

For snatching the top prize, the model won herself a trip for two to Victoria Falls, two return air tickets to the resort town among other vouchers worth more than US$300.

In an interview shortly after being crowned, the model could not hide her elation.

"I am very excited after winning this title which means a lot for me.

"I have been praying for this day to come and I owe my success to God," she said.

Vanessa was however quick to point out that she was now focussing on Miss Tourism Zimbabwe.

"The journey is not yet over and I am also confident that I will do well in the national finals and there is nothing that can stop us from bringing the crown to Harare," the model said.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Debra Chidavaenzi, the Miss Tourism Harare managing director who also revealed that her team had begun preparing for the finals.

"From this point, we wish to continue working hard with our models to ensure that we win the top prize at the national finals," she said.

Kiri Davies and television personality Jefferson Muserera who were helping the models with grooming lessons were optimistic that Harare had the potential to do well.

Despite a paltry crowd that gathered at the Rainbow Towers, artistes who graced the occasion thrilled those who attended the event.

Sulumani Chimbetu was the toast of the night as he delivered a polished performance.

The star-studded Orchestra Dendera Kings ably complemented the young musician when he played songs like Mukupera Kwegore and One Way.

Dino Mudondo and Madiz also proved their mettle as they managed to thrill fans with well-choreographed performance.

Tongai Moyo put the icing on the cake with a majestic show as he gave the audience a taste of his forthcoming album with the songs Zvinhu Zvinoshanduka and Muridzi Wenyaya.

But if the truth be told, the attendance was very disappointing considering all the hype that preceded the contest.
