Botswana: Global Expo Takes Off Wednesday

13 October 2008

This year's business networking show, Global Expo '08, will get underway from Wednesday.

Under the theme 'Promoting Economic, Diversification and International Trade, the three-day BEDIA-piloted show will be launched by the Vice President Mompati Merafhe at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) on October 15.

"This is a business-to-business exhibition that gives local and international manufacturers an opportunity to build, generate and maintain business networking relations," says a statement from BEDIA. "It also enables them to find market access and to sell their products."

Alongside the exhibition will be investment forums, workshops and buyer-seller meetings hosted by the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board (PPADB), Debswana's Supply Chain Management Programme, Tati Nickel Mine and the Department of Industrial Affairs' Local Procurement Programme.

Workshops on market access will focus on emerging regional markets, namely: Zambia, the DRC, Angola and Mozambique. These will be conducted by the SADC Secretariat and Whitehouse Associates.

Presentations on short-term financing options for SMMEs will be made by the Botswana Development Corporation (BDC), the Botswana Export Credit Insurance and some commercial banks.

"There will also be a business-to-business matchmaking session which will pair exhibitors up with relevant visitors and potential partners," BEDIA says.

Participating countries include South Africa, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Swaziland and the United States.

Global Expo Botswana is a multi-sectoral exhibition covering agribusiness, ICT, construction, energy, education, tourism and electrical appliances, among others. About 90 local companies and 40 from abroad will be on exhibition at Global Expo '08. BEDIA says it expects in excess of 6 000 visitors to the show.

"The exhibition will be open to the general public on Saturday October 18,2008," says the statement. Tickets are being sold at Molapo Crossing and Riverwalk in Gaborone. They will also be available at the gate on the opening day.

BOCCIM President Modiri Mbaakanyi will perform the official closing of Global Expo '08.
