Selebi-Phikwe — Six students at Boikhutso Junior Secondary School in Botshabelo have fallen pregnant this year, the head teacher has said.
Speaking during the school's prize giving ceremony on Friday, Tefo Seganabeng said one of the students is a Form One girl.
The pregnancies come at a time when the school has intensified its pastoral programme to instil discipline among students. "Most of the students do not have the educational support from their parents and as such, teachers play a pivotal role to help mould them into responsible and accountable people," Seganabeng said.
He added that the few that come from families that support their learning have excelled at school. Despite the challenges, Seganabeng said indiscipline at the school had not gone out of hand.
"At Boikhutso, we are proud to have manageable students. There is more ownership and responsibility over the school property," she said.Guest speaker, Molebatsi Molebatsi, the director of Bi Hati Solutions expressed concern over indiscipline at schools.
He challenged parents to take an active role in moulding students to become responsible citizens. Molebatsi said disciplining students should not be left to teachers alone. He said the pastoral policy should help schools instil discipline, which the Minister of Education, Jacob Nkate, has emphasised.
"There is a problem of indiscipline at schools. I ask myself what time do undisciplined students do their school work," Molebatsi wondered. He expressed concern at alcohol and substance abuse in schools.
"We are producing a generation of alcoholics. We know that alcohol has always been consumed responsibly but what is happening nowadays is deplorable," he said.
Molebatsi said vandalism of school property is an area of concern and students who do so are destroying their future. He said stakeholders in education should emphasise discipline in schools.
He urged students, teachers and parents to join hands in the fight against HIV/AIDS.Bi Hati Solutions donated two computers and a laptop for use by the pastoral department to promote good behaviour at the school.
