Two former African Football Player of the Year, Ghana's Abedi Pele Ayew and Nigeria's Rashidi Yekini are among the important sports personalities expected at the media conference on Tuesday, October 14, (today) to announce the top five nominees for the 2008 Glo-CAF Awards.
The media conference will hold at the Mike Adenuga Towers, corporate headquarters of Globacom Limited, sponsors of the annual Africa best players award organised by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). General Seyi Memene, the First Vice President of CAF and Dr. Amos Adamu, a CAF and FIFA Executive Board member will lead the confederation's delegation to the event.
Abedi Pele won the awards consecutively in 1991 and 1992, while Yekini won the title the following year. "Globacom is committed to honouring past and present illustrious African stars and the invitation of Pele and Yekini is not only to honour them but also to continue to show-case them as role models for younger players", explained Okon Iyanam, Globacom's Executive Director, Marketing Communications.
Suleiman Habuba, the Communications Director of CAF says all the players who received nominations will be announced at the conference while only the top five nominees will go into the next balloting. "By announcing every nomination received, we believe it will not only lend credence to the transparency of the process, it will also serve as a morale booster to all those who got nominations, even if it were to be just one vote", Habuba stated, adding "the list will be in alphabetical order and not by order of highest nor lowest points".
Coaches of the 53 national federations affiliated to CAF will cast the final votes to select the winners in all the categories which include African Footballer of the Year, Best Young Player, Best Women Player, Best Coach, Best Home-based Player, National Team of the Year and Club of the Year.
Mali's Frederick Kanoute is the reigning African Footballer of the Year. He took the award at the last Glo-CAF Awards ceremony in Lome, the capital of Togo.
