Angola: Two Foreign Vessels Retained at Lobito Harbour

14 October 2008

Lobito — Two foreign large-scale ships were on Monday detained by the Angolan Navy authorities whilst illegally fishing in the country's territorial waters, announced the naval command of the southern region.

The commander of the southern naval region, vice admiral Daniel António, told the press that the two vessels were found in the region close to Kwanza Sul province fishing in territorial waters about 22 kilometres from the Angolan coast.

According to the senior navy officer, the ships were navigating without flags and with expired navigation documents, something that disobeys international regulations.

Since it is an issue of the economic and foreign migration spheres, the vessels and its crew, whose number was not revealed by the source, have been retained at the Lobito harbour, awaiting a decision by the competent entities.

This is the first time that Angolan authorities, in this region, have detained ships of the kind in the past six years.
