Abuja — The menace of the HIV/AIDS and other life threatening diseases in the country can be effectively halted if the potency of mathematical variables is well harnessed.
This is the position of the Director General National Mathematical Centre, Prof Ale at its 2nd matriculation ceremony in Abuja yesterday.
The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) and the University of Abuja (Uniabuja) Monday in Abuja matriculated 30 students into its Joint Higher Degree Programme in Financial Mathematics.
Speaking at the ceremony which is the second matriculation of students into the programme, the Director General of the Center, Professor Sam Ale lamented that Nigeria as a country blessed with abundant natural and human resources have been lying hidden for centuries.
Ale, who said that the country has been "breeding generations of wasted geniuses" because of lack of developmental plan for its human capital said that the time for such action is now.
He further emphasised the importance of mathematical sciences to the development of the country, pointing out that the menace of the HIV/AIDS and other life threatening diseases in the country can be effectively halted if the potency of mathematical variables is well harnessed.About 31 students from 18 states of the federation were matriculated.
The first set have already graduated and waiting for their official graduation ceremony.Ale said mathematics has not been fully utilised in this part of the world and that accounted for many problems being encountered in the country. He said 'There are so many situations that can be modeled mathematically to get solutions. Even if you take HIV/AIDS, it can be modeled mathematically in order to find a solution. And many other problems that are bedeviling the country like the ecological problems. And how can it be done? We are going to show that to the world soon. And that is why the world will be gathering at the National Mathetical Centre continuously to look at these problems. The DG said the matriculating students would in the nearest future be among the Think-Thank that would help solve most of the problems confronting the nation.'"With their certificate in financial mathematics they can secure job with so many financial institutions where they could begin to model many financial problems and find solution to them'"The Centre is one of the institutions set up by the commission for development in the South South with its headquarters in Pakistan after it decided to raise some centers in the world for some specific field. For example in china, for atmospheric studies, and in Nigeria they came up with mathematical center that should be for mathematical modeling", he said.
