Nigeria: 12 Die in Auto Accident

Dutse — Ten people, including five members of a family, died instantly Sunday night, in a ghastly accident along Hadejia-Ringim road in Jigawa State.

Two others died later at the Ringim General Hospital, from injuries sustained in the accident.An eye-witness who gave his name as Ali, told THISDAY that the accident occurred along Kwanar Dabi, near Ringim town, when a commercial Peugeot 505 station wagon collided with a trailer carrying cattle.According to Ali, the Peugeot, which was coming from Hadejia, was trying to avoid potholes when it lost control and ran into the trailer coming from the opposite direction."The Peugeot was coming from Hadejia and was probably trying to avoid potholes, because it suddenly faced the Trailer which was coming from Kano . You know, it was dark and the car was probably going too fast. It ran straight into the trailer," the witness said.

When the villagers got to the scene, they discovered that 10 passengers had died instantly. "Two were rescued alive and taken to Ringim by good Samaritans. We heard that they also died later."Ten out of the twelve victims were recognised by villagers and relatives who got to the scene later, while two women were not identified as at the time of filing this report.Out of those identified, five were members of the same family, two were wives of one man, while two were his daughters and the other, his aged mother. All the victims were buried yesterday morning according to Islamic injunctions.When contacted, Spokesman of Jigawa State Police Command, Abdu Jinjiri (ASP), confirmed the accident but could not give details.
