Lagos — Prof. Abdullahi Bayero, Provost of Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) in Sokoto State, said that the institution is seeking to employ 54 doctorate degree holders to meet National Universities Commission (NUC) guidelines. Bayero told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recently in Sokoto that, the directive was sequel to the 18 first degree programmes being run by the college.
'The programmes are affiliated to Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria," he explained.
According to him, already a "Resources assessment team" from the NUC, had visited the college and the outcome of its findings were being awaited.
Bayero commended the state government for providing adequate funds to upgrade the college's facilities, prior to the NUC team's visit.
"We used the money to provide more books, link the college to the Internet as well as ensure that all that was required was available," he said.
The provost said the college had only 15 doctorate degree holders and adequate first and second degree holders to enhance academic learning.
He said that the college would seek the governor's approval for "A certain number of sabbatical leave vacancies" for between five and 10 years.
"The management will also continue to prioritise staff training. More lecturers will be sponsored for second and doctorate degree courses, "the provost said.
