Liberia: Commissioner Compound Under Construction

14 October 2008

Monrovia — Local authority in River Gee County has announced the implementation of several development projects aimed at giving the county a facelift.

Making the disclosure recently, River Gee County Superintendent J. Karku Simpson said the development projects include the construction of a commissioner's compound, the rehabilitation of the educational and health facilities and the reconditioning of roads.

He said his administration was also engaged in the renovation of structures that were abandoned during the war, noting that they could be useful.

Superintendent Simpson pointed out that despite the underdevelopment of the county, he was committed to making sure that River Gee becomes a place of attraction.

He admitted that although educational facilities were lacking in most parts of the county, he expressed satisfaction over the resumption of schools in other parts of the county such as Fish Town, River Gee's provincial capital.

"When I was appointed by President Sirleaf, I promised that I would leave a legacy so that history will show what I've done for my people," Supt. Simpson said.

On allegation by some citizens of the county linking him to corruption, the River Gee superintendent said those making the claim cannot show proof.

He said some of those making the allegations are "old politicians" who did nothing for the county.
