Sierra Leone: Another PMDC heavyweight quits

14 October 2008

One of the strongest supporters of Charles Margai and founding member of Peoples Movement for Democratic Change, PMDC a splinter group of the opposition SLPP, is reported to have left the now flagging party.

Moijue Kaikai, who has spent the most part of his life in recent times, returned to Sierra Leone as a loyalist to Margai and later became a diehard heavyweight of the party since it was formed almost three years ago.

Speculations are that he might soon pitch tents with the ruling APC, an opportunity it could grab to establish its support base in the Pujehun district where Kaikai has claimed popularity.

Margai could not be reached for comment but a party source said his apparent resignation could not be unconnected to Margai's decision to send him out of his house over petty arguments.

The situation was said to have deteriorated to a point where both one time closed friends decided not to talk to each other again.

Kaikai, who was very instrumental to get PMDC bases established in Pujehun and London, could not give detailed response but admitted that he was disappointed at the relationship that existed between both of them.

Observers say his disappointment could also be linked to his woeful failure to clinch the much coveted council chairmanship under the PMDC. He claimed that his party had played no significant role to support his bid for the position.

He is on record to have boycotted all recent meetings held by the party including that of the national council that was held on a special Friday in Bo, later in Freetown.

Reports from Pujehun indicated that Kaikai was so disgusted with Margai that the two could not share a room for meeting.

Close friends of Moijue have confirmed that he has since sent in his letter of resignation from a party he risked his life and the threats from Berewa and SLPP for.
