Mozambique: Illicit Medicines And Weapons Seized

14 October 2008

The Mozambican authorities, in an joint operation involving the police, customs, health, and forestry and wild life services, seized in Maputo on Friday unspecified quantities of medicines and weapons, including firearms and hunting equipment belonging to a Portuguese citizen named Victor Gomes.

This was the culmination of a long running police investigation. A police source told AIM that the medicines and the guns were found in an apartment belonging to Gomes, and he is now under police custody.

The source said that the medicines had been illegally imported and were being sold at the Biofarma chemists shop in Maputo. This pharmacy was closed down on Friday for police investigations, but has subsequently reopened.

In Gomes's apartment, the police also found freezers containing game meat. It seems that Gomes was not living in that apartment, and was merely using it for storage.

The police said that this discovery was the result of denunciations by local residents, who found it strange that merchandise was constantly unloaded at the apartment.
