Uganda: Companies Urged to Research on 'Mukene'

Samuel Balagadde

14 October 2008

Kampala — The fisheries ministry has advised fish processing and exporting companies to explore opportunities of exporting mukene (silver fish) to the international market.

R.Wilson Mwanja, a fisheries ministry official, said the mukene population was on the increase and required good market.

Mwanja, who was addressing fish processors and exporters on food safety management at the Grand Imperial hotel in Kampala, said mukene was doing well on the local market and would fetch more revenue on the international market.

He, however, warned the fishing community on the continued use of illegal fishing gear that has resulted into reduction of some fish species like the Nile Perch.

He called for value addition to mukene.
