First Lady Turai Yar'adua is collaborating with the Africa Cancer Care Inc and the ministry of health to build a $40 million cancer preventive care centre. Turai is expected to flag-off the Walk-A-Thon program taking place at Millennium Park Abuja on Saturday.
The first lady is to advocate for funds from well meaning Nigeria to help build the centre which will be a kick off point to produce a similar venture in the six geographical zones across the country. Speaking on the walk, Mrs Stella Anyawu, the event coordinator, said that 18 surgeons will be flown in from the United States to operate and treat cancer infected persons.
The Africa Cancer Care Inc is a US based Non-Governmental agency out of the MD Anderson Medical Centre in Houston, Texas. The organization is collaborating with African Cancer Prevention Group, Ego Bekee Cancer Foundation, Federal Ministry of Health, Allied Energy, the Dome Entertainment Company and Nanet Suites to bring medical professionals in a bid to fight the epidemic in the country.
