Kampala — The government has offered Shs4 billion to and reconstruct demolish the dilapidated Ugandan embassy building in Brussels. The building will be replaced with a new structure, Ambassador James Mugume has said.

Speaking to journalists at the media centre yesterday Mr Mugume said the Ministry of Finance has released Shs3bn out of which Shs9.2m will be used to demolish the old ramshackle building and Shs2.4b will cover the construction costs of the new embassy building.

"We had to consider between renovating the existing building and having a new one constructed," Mr Mugume said. "We decided to demolish it and replace it with a better structure. But the Brussels authorities demanded that we first produce the architectural graphics of the new building. We are now going to submit it to the Brussels city authorities and in one month that old building will be demolished."

Daily Monitor on Monday reported about the dilapidated state of the Ugandan Brussels embassy, and the official ambassador's house.
