As the world moves to entrench sustainable consumption in the life-style of people, the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) and the Consumers International have joined the world to call on governments to adopt the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Guidelines on Education for Sustainable Consumption in formal education.

A statement from CPC says it has joined the global clamour by sending letters to the Ministers of Education and Environment on the need to make sustainable consumption part of the nation's formal education.

Similarly, the Council has initiated collaborative moves with the Federal Government's curriculum-setting agency, the National Educational Research & Development Centre, in order to explore the possibility of raising a school curriculum for consumer protection.

The statement added that as part of the programme, CPC has conducted an educational session on sustainable consumption for teachers and members of the Consumer Protection Club of Junior Secondary School, Jikwoyi, in the Federal Capital Territory.

"UN Guidelines for Consumer Protection whose adoption made the Federal Government to enact the CPC Act, No 66 of 1992, defines sustainable consumption as including; meeting the needs of present and future generations for goods and services in ways that are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable".

It said Wednesday, October 15, has been declared as the Consumer Action Day on Education for Sustainable Consumption where consumer organisations around the world will be calling on national governments to implement the UNEP Guidelines.

"The coordinated day of action has been organised by the global consumer movement as a means of empowering consumers to make responsible decisions from a young age," the statement said.
