Liberia: President Suspends Bong County Superintendent

15 October 2008

The superintendent of Bong County, Mr. Rennie Jackson, has been suspended by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf relating to certain reported financial malpractices in the use of the county's development funds. The President informed Superintendent Jackson in a letter that he would remain suspended pending findings and recommendations of an investigation to be undertaken by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

An Executive Mansion release says a recent report by the General Auditing Commission details acts of malpractices relating to the county's escrow account.

Meanwhile, the President has directed the Ministry of Justice to ensure that a Liberian owned contractual firm, Mak Incorporated, immediately restitute USD$147,927.17. The amount was disbursed from the Mittal Steel Annual Social Contribution Escrow Account to the company for the construction of a twelve-mile Hendii Road in Fuamah District, Bong County. The amount, paid to the head of the company, Mr. Aaron George, represented the full contract cost, contrary to a provision of contract which calls for installment payments.

To date, work on the road project has not been done. The President has directed the Justice Ministry to commence investigation leading to possible prosecution. The President has stated explicity that individuals who have embezzled money will be held accountable.

I Morris Darbo Jr. thanked President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her action in with suspending the superintendent of Bong county. She showed to the liberians that sheis truly fighting corruption in the country. Eventhough, She still has some of them corrupt officers in her government, but all of these example will make the others to stop misusing the liberian people fund.

This is great news. i can imagine how this kind of practices have marred development prospects. i look forward to the investigation, as indicated in the President's letter and possible prosecution. Hope this will send a warning to all those who think they can use the public funds for their greedy, selfish intentions. Madam president, bravo, for the right step in the right direction.
