Windhoek — The 12th edition of the annual Moto-Cross Inter-Series takes place at the Gallina race track, north of Windhoek, from the 8th to the 15th of next month.
The series is the biggest moto-cross event on the African continent. After several attempts, the chairman of the AMU Moto-Cross Working Group, Michael Nederlof (Namibia), eventually managed to nominate these two races as predicate races forming part of the championship of the Southern Africa (Southern MX Challenge).
Nederlof had to do a lot of persuading at the AMU board down south. The brainchild behind the signing of European riders Bernd Kroemer, has done his job successfully since the inception of the Inter-Series.
It isn't an easy task to get an attractive field of riders to Namibia with a minimum amount of money available. Nevertheless, Kroemer managed to sign riders from 14 different nations.
For the third time the American rider Carter Gurnee will be making his third appearance on Namibian soil under the official team name Hotwire.com.na Honda Team USA, sponsored by Hotwire (represented by Torsten Schidlowski) and Pupkewitz-Honda (represented by Phillip van der Merwe), who will provide the American with a strong Honda 450 thumber.
Mart de Jong from the Netherlands will be coming to Namibia for the third time. He definitely enjoys the Inter-Series a lot. De Jong can always be found in the leading pack and in 2002 he chased the reigning MX-2 world champion of 2008, Tyla Rattray, relentlessly around the Gallina MX track - an unforgettable sight.
The vice-world champion 2008, Steffi Laier from Germany, at last has signed competing in Namibia. Two years ago, she participated for the first time and achieved a brilliant 3rd place in the 125cc Class against strong male opponents.
Benjamin Kolberg won the Inter-Series in 2006 together with the greatly desired title Namibia International Champion. He will definitely come again this year to try and win this title for a second time.
From Russia we will have Vitaly Tonkow, who will participate for the third time. In 2001 he won the Namibia Trophy of Nations, together with his partner Sergej Garin. Back then the Inter-Series was run in a Best Pairs system.
For the fifth time Gunnar Schuster from northern Germany will try to win the highest crown of Namibian MX sport. The ex-German champion often rode in the leading pack during previous Inter-Series but technical problems or injuries always deprived him of winning the desired title.
For the first time we may welcome 24-year-old Frenchman Pela (Pierre Alexandre) Renet. We know that he's got a French champion title under his belt and won his first GP points in the MX-2 Class in 2005. In 2007 he moved up to the MX-1 Class. From the same team - TEKA Bodo Schmidt Team - we can expect Markus Norlen from Sweden, who had good results at the end of the 2008 season on a national and international level.
The five-fold Canadian champion and ex-AMA rider Jean Sebastien Roy has made an excellent name for himself in international MX sport. In the highly remunerative US-American AMA-SX Championships he advanced in his best year 2001 to a Top 10 rider, then racing for Planet Honda Team.
His team colleague and MX-2 rider Marc Antoinne Genereux is less well known but has a very good reputation in Canada.
Then we must not forget our man from Scotland, Richard Reid, who impressed last year with fine Top-5 results and in the meantime considers Namibia as his second home country.
The following riders from South Africa have also sniffed GP air in 2008: Richard van der Westhuizen, Brandon Wheeler, Kerim Fitzgerald (Namibia International Champion 2007) and Shannon Terreblanche.
Ross Branch from Botswana also achieved two points at the South African GP. Furthermore, we find all top riders from Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and of course the best riders from Namibia.
But that is not all: As in previous years at night the fans will get entertained by the adrenalin pushing RED BULL X-Fighters Freestyle Show Namibia, plus there will be bands entertaining you till dawn, bands like PD & the Mojo Blues Band at the Jägermeister-Party and one week later Snotkop from South Africa will give two live concerts at Gallina Motocross Park at the Tafel Lager Rock Night.
For those who still want to rock the night away, Namibia's best DJ CoCo will turn the tables. Don't forget, all this action at Gallina Moto Cross Park on 8th and 15th November. Be part of the biggest Entertainment Show in Namibia.
This paper will introduce all participating riders in the next weeks by means of rider profiles and pictures.
So make a note of the "Jägermeister MX Classic" on the 8th of November and the second race "Wesbank MX Dash for Cash" on the 15th November at the Gallina Moto Cross Park near Windhoek. World-class MX races are awaiting you!
