Addis Ababa — Egypt, the Sudan and Ethiopia have approved 100 million Birr budget for joint development work in Nile basin to be carried out in 2009, Ethiopian News Agency reported citing the Ministry of Water Resource.
The news agency cited the minister, Asfaw Dingamo, who attended the 25th Session of the Eastern Nile Basin countries' Ministerial Council held in Cairo, Egypt as having said that the budget would be utilized for studied and intended and national projects, as a running cost for Eastern Nile Technical Regional Office (ENTRO), publicity and for other activities that could ensure common benefits.
The meeting has taken note that the projects are well in progress in each of the countries and further be enhanced, he quoted in the report.
Accordingly, the meeting has passed decision to materialize the detailed study on Baro and Akobo basins and to solicit fund through ENTRO.
The ministers have agreed that the coordinators for projects in individual countries have to be full time worker.
Ethiopia has accepted ENTRO as a legal entity while the Sudan and Egypt have not yet recognized it, the report added.
The four-day meeting held in Cairo, Egypt from Oct. 8 - 12, 2008 is meant to discuss means of promoting cooperation and regional developments of the Eastern Nile Basin countries, it was learnt.
