Huambo — Culture minister, Rosa Cruz e Silva, on Wednesday appealed to specialists and Angolans in general to double efforts for the revalorisation of the country's vernacular languages.
Talking at the opening of the Third Meeting on Vernacular Languages, Rosa Cruz e Silva defended the need for a profound reflection about the state of the inclusion process of the local languages in the education system, as well as their preservation and promotion.
"This meeting constitutes an excellent opportunity to reflect together and debate our ideas and divulge the vernacular languages for the development of the country and the advance of the new technologies of communication and information".
According to the minister, "if during the cultural aggression" carried out by the Portuguese colonial authorities the indigenous languages survived, today, more than ever, all efforts must be made for their valorisation and, consequently, the consolidation of Angolan cultural identity.
Rosa Cruz e Silva stressed also that by allowing inter-communication among communities, the vernacular languages are important in the Angolan social and economic mosaic, as well as for the development of communities.
