Nigeria striker Obafemi Martins could return to the field as early as Monday against Manchester City following injury to Michael Owen.
Martins has missed Newcastle's last two games with injury and was not expected to be part of the City game, but manager Joe Kinnear told SkySports that the Nigerian has had his schedule pushed up because of Owen's injury.
"We have pushed up his (Martins') training schedule, we were planning to keep him back but because of this we have brought him back into the first-team squad," he said.
"He hasn't had to have any more treatment back on the injury to his knee prior to training so that is a good sign and he is in my mind to be involved in the match against Manchester City."
Martins has also missed all of Nigeria's 2010 World Cup qualifiers so far.
