Nairobi — Women lawyers have welcomed the Waki report, especially the findings on sexual offences.
The lawyers said they support the creation of a special tribunal to end Kenya's systemic impunity and human rights violations.
Federation of Women Lawyers (Fida) executive director Patricia Nyaundi urged the Government in a signed statement to quickly set up an effective legal and institutional framework that will allow the setting up of the tribunal.
Revelation
The framework, Fida said, must have provisions ensuring that all politicians, security agents, businessmen and others named in the list of alleged perpetrators are prosecuted.
The Waki report revealed that there were numerous cases of sexual abuse, most committed by security officers. The report shockingly reveals how mothers were raped and assaulted as their children watched.
The special tribunal, Fida states, should seek accountability against people bearing the greatest responsibility for crimes, particularly crimes against humanity. This includes all forms of sexual violence against women, girls and men.
