16 October 2008

The national women softball team final selection for the Zone VI competition will be held over the weekend, coach Moses Mosweu has said.

The coach asserted that preparations are going on well for the Zone VI event billed for next month.

He explained that their focus is more on the coming international competitions and they will use the Zone VI event as a build up. He said they are not worried how the team will perform at the Zone VI championship. Mosweu said they had wanted to select the team from both the two softball regions in the country, but this has not been possible as only one player from the north turned up for selection. Currently the team has 25 players.

Mosweu said the Zone VI competition will help them prepare for big competitions like 2010 World Senior Championships. He said their big challenge in the regional event is to beat South Africa, which has always given them a headache in the competition. Mosweu believed that his players are ready and if they follow instructions, they will do well. He said the ongoing Ipelegeng league has helped prepare the team. Mosweu said they would have loved to have international friendly games to prepare for the competition but this has not been possible because they are financially constrained.

The coach added that they have included many young players in the team to give them international exposure. He expressed hope that this time, more countries will take part in the competition to give it more weight. He was worried that only a few countries attend the competition and this has contributed to the below par performances by African countries at international competitions. Botswana, Lesotho and South Africa are the only countries that have always participated in the Zone VI competition. The Botswana team will go to camp for a week before leaving for the event billed for October 31-November 1.
