Nairobi — More than Sh2.2 billion is needed to tarmac the Malindi-Sala Gate road leading to Tsavo National Park.
Malindi MP Gideon Mung'aro asked the Government to consider the road, although it had not been allocated funds this financial year.
"The road is a vital link between the beach hotels and Tsavo park because all tourists from the North Coast resorts use it," he said.
The road would also open up the Chakama-Lango Baya area where the proposed international airport is to be built, Mr Mung'aro said.
Local feeder roads would also be opened following the acquisition of a grader from Belgium bought through the constituency fund.
The MP said that Sh19.4 million from the CDF kitty had been set aside for education, while some Sh6 million will be used to build a youth centre in Malindi Town.
On land, the MP said that the Coast Parliamentary Group, of which he is assistant chairman, had approached the American embassy for funding to settle squatters in the province.
"The embassy has expressed willingness to assist us," he said. The World Bank, he said, had also shown interest in giving funds for squatter resettlement.
Mr Mung'aro said that adjudication on the decades-old controversial Kikombe Tele settlement scheme in his constituency would be done before end of the year.
Lifting embargo
Lands ministry, he added, was considering lifting an eight-year embargo on Jimba/Gede Chembe-Kibabamche and Msoloni settlement schemes in Watamu.
Assistant Lands minister Samuel Gonzi Rai toured the area two weeks ago and promised his ministry's action.
