The Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Prof George Gyan- Baffour yesterday, in Accra, commissioned a new building for Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) to enhance their core operations in classification and valuation of goods in the country.

The project, he said would enable CEPS to resume their core functions of classification and valuation, which would enable them to take over these functions being performed by the Destination Inspection Companies next year.

Prof. Gyan-Baffour indicated that government is going to take measures that would enhance trade, hence the opening of the new office to help government realize its dream.

He said government has encouraged the service to continue to modernize and make greater use of new information technology solutions to boost its efficiency.

The Minister observed that the introduction of Ghana Community Net (GCNet) and it's related systems by government marked a turning point in the automation of the service operations in the country.

The government has gone a step further by complementing the existing systems with a new system that would allow the full automation of Customs processes.

Prof. Gyan-Baffour was quick to add that the GCNet /GCSMS would be integrated into the Ghana Customs Secure Document Management System, which would provide importers with an enhanced single window for clearing their goods at the ports.

The Commissioner of CEPS, Mr. Emmanuel Doku stated that the new office could accommodate about 70 officers and it is equipped with three interview rooms, a conference hall, a canteen and others.

He said the newly opened office represents a further step in the modernization of CEPS procedures and work practices. It would also enable CEPS to continue to proffer its services to the general public and to further enhance its ability to collect government's revenue to the benefit of all Ghanaians, he added.
