Zimbabwe: Musician Pio Macheka Dies

20 October 2008

Harare — CHIMURENGA musician Pio Farai Macheka, who rose to fame with the song Karinga Wangu, has died. He was 41.

Macheka died yesterday at Chitungwiza Central Hospital following a short illness.

His former manager Martin Chemhere confirmed Macheka's death, saying he had received a call from the musician's wife, but had no details.

Macheka last performed alongside Mbira Dzenharira and various other groups in Zvishavane last month.

Chemhere said he last spoke to Macheka three days ago.

"I was not aware of him being ill. Maybe he was not feeling well and did not want people to know," Chemhere said.

Macheka, who claimed that Chimurenga guru Thomas Mapfumo ordered some of his men to assault him and cut off his dreadlocks, burst onto the music scene in the early 90s when he released his debut album Mabweadziva with the backing of his group the Black Ites.

His other albums are MaKitchen Party and Mutonga.

At the time of his death, the musician was trying to stage a comeback, but it proved difficult.

Mourners are gathered at his family home near Chitubu Shopping centre in Glen Norah A, Harare.
