Katsina — Katsina State House of Assembly, in an effort to ensure effective sanitation statute, has amended the existing law, establishing the state's Sanitation Monitoring Committee and other related matters.

The law, which had been in existence since the military era, was amended after the third reading of the bill by Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Abdullahi Shuaibu Tandama.

Tandama said the law would address some flaws identified in the edict setting up the task force committee, which would have a chairman and four members.

He said the committee was expected to monitor the evacuation of refuse, clearing of major roads and eject petty traders and artisans along the road.

He added that the committee would also be charged with responsibility of dismantling illegal structures as well as ejecting squatters.

Other functions of the committee, which would run for a period of five years, include the spraying of insecticides, public enlightenment on personal hygiene, clearing of stray animals on high ways and prosecution of sanitation law defaulters.

The speaker, Alhaji Yau Umar Gwajo-Gwajo, directed the legal drafting department to prepare a clean copy of the law for submission to the governor for accent.
