Kampala — OVER 30 Buganda historicals have been commemorated for their contribution to the Buganda Kingdom, Uganda and Africa.
The function, which involved the award of certificates at Back Packers Camp in Lubaga on Friday, was organised by Muteesa I Apolo Kaggwa Kawalya (MAKK) Foundation.
Buganda premier Eng. J. B Walusimbi said it was important for people to remember the good things various people have contributed to society.
"Buganda has a very rich history compared to other regions. The backbone of this country lies on Buganda, since our people spearheaded independence," he said.
Walusimbi, who is also the patron of the Foundation, said many people had been forgotten despite their contribution to Buganda and Uganda.
Among those who were awarded certificates was George William Kakoma, the composer of the Uganda National Anthem, John Ssebaana Kizito, the Late Prof. Yusuf Kironde Lule and the late Polycap Kakooza.
Walusimbi stressed that even developed countries have reached where they are because of such people. "We need patriotic people who love their nation with all their hearts... people who can die for the common good. If it was not for Muteesa I, Sir Apolo Kaggwa, Kawalya Kaggwa and others, I do not think we would be happy as we are today," he said.
He said the Foundation would trace all Buganda heroes who had been abandoned.
