Uganda: Masaka Wetland Named as Bird Reserve

Kampala — THE International Bird Life Conference in Argentina has recognised Nabajjuzi Wetland in Masaka Municipality as an International Bird Area (IBA), Nature Uganda executive officer Caroline Akuti has said.

Dismus Buregyeya writes that Akuti said: "Nature Uganda identified and raised the Nabajjuzzi profile for confirmation as an IBA at the Bird Life International World Conference. It will be added to the 32 IBA sites listed in Uganda."

Nabajjuzzi swamp was also officiallyâ-‚commissioned by the Masaka district vice-chairperson, Anas Mawanda, as a Ramsar Site of international wetland importance on Wednesday.

The wetland is an extensive permanent system of mixed papyrus and miscathus swamps that joins River Katonga.â-‚It also-‚serves as a water source for the Masaka Municipal Council water and sewerage department, according to the care-taker of the Nabajjuzzi Eco-Tourism Site, Tonny Mutagubya.
