Nigeria: Talakawa Summit Recommends Poverty Alleviation Measures

Jigawa State government have been asked to design a state policy that will guarantee that all monies earned in the state be spent within the state, to help enhance economic activities in the 17 years old state as well as fight poverty.

This appeal was contained in the communiqué issued after the Talakawa Summit, signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Aminu Abdullahi and Malam Y.Z Ya'u of CITAD, chairman and Secretary respectively, stressing that Jigawa need a firm economic policies to correct past mistakes.

It states, "the Government should design policies which would ensure that all monies earned in Jigawa State should as much as possible be spent within the state, in order to boost economic activities of the state".

According to the communique, the government was, also to make an effort to eradicate poverty, support and patronizing the products of local craftsmen in the state, saying it will go a long way in improving on the quality to match that of foreign goods.

It also recommended for the establishment of more vocational centres for the disabled and to rehabilitate the existing ones.

Equally, it is also said all contractors handling various Government projects within the state should recruit their manpower and personnel from within the state.

The meeting which observed the increasing fall in income of local craftsmen and women in the state due to competition from modern products, also tasked the government to adopt policies that make the Talakawa access soft loans.

"We identify the local craftsmen lack of modern technology and infrastructures such as roads, electricity and health facilities as the major causative agents of the lingering poverty in the society," the communique said.

They also stated that, in addressing the problem, government should give priority training to the local craftsmen, provide them with tools, as well as access to markets for their local products.
