The Cashewnut Board of Tanzania (CBT) has announced indicative prices of cashews for Mtwara Region.
CBT director-general Beno Mhagama told journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the prices for first and second-class cashews would be Sh675 and Sh540 a kilo respectively.
He said Mtwara would use the bonded warehouse receipts system when buying the crop.
"By using this system, farmers will be paid 70 per cent for the standard cashewnuts while for the second class they will be paid 100 per cent," he said.
They will be paid 30 per cent for the second time after their cashewnuts are sold through auction.
Lindi, Ruvuma, Coast, Dar es Salaam and Tanga cooperative unions will buy cashews from farmers who will be paid once.
All cashew buyers have been urged to purchase cashewnuts from the cooperative unions' stores. The board has vowed to punish those who violate the procedures.
