Uganda: Nyangweso Wants to Retain UOC Seat

Kampala — UGANDA Olympic Committee (UOC) president Maj. General Francis Nyangweso has said he is going nowhere and will seek another term of office soon.

He has been UOC president since 1981.

"It will only be the voters to end my leadership at UOC. If they see that I have served well and they grant me another term, I will continue as president," said Nyangweso.

Nyangweso fell seriously ill during the Olympics, with many analysts concluding he would not seek another term even after he recovers.

"I will remain UOC executive member till death whether those who don't want me here like it or not because I am a member of IOC, and the charter says so," he explained.

Nyangweso, 68, is one of only 12 African members on the powerful International Olympic Committee (IOC) 77-man executive. He competed as a light middle-weight boxer at the 1960 Olympics with the likes of Muhammad Ali.

The ageing sports administrator has also kept the election date close to his chest, and indicated the polls could actually be held this year. UOC goes to polls once every four years, and are due next year.

"The elections will either be there this year or next year once we are ready. There is no need for panic," Nyangweso said yesterday.

Uganda has 16 UOC registered associations including archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, swimming, cycling, football, handball, hockey, shooting, table tennis, volleyball, weightlifting and wrestling.

On the standard of sports today, he blasted NCS and its general secretary Jasper Aligawesa for not guiding the national federations.

"NCS is just a dead body antagonising national federations instead of funding and guiding them,"he said.

"I can't believe that my brother Aligawesa is in the middle of the boxing conflicts- a sport that gave Uganda pride years back dieing and you say that NCS is working?"

He also lashed at sports officers that have failed to promote sports in their districts but wait to get allowances.

"These district sports officers take sports as recreation," he lamented.
