Nigeria: Akpabio - Opposition Too Disorganised to Rule Country

Abuja — Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, yesterday said the opposition parties in Nigeria were too disorganised to become a threat to the rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that it was obvious that the PDP will rule more than the 50 years predicted by its chairman.

He also said in the next ten years, PDP will rule the 36 states of the federation following its past performance in the last ten years.

Akpabio's state is hosting the summit of PDP to mark its 10th year anniversary as well as chronicles its past 10 years in government and project into the future.

He told State House Correspondents after conferring with President Umaru Yar'Adua that "the opposition in Nigeria is scattered, it has not been organised. Nigerians cannot trust the opposition because they believe in criticisms without proffering solutions."

He added that, "The PDP is coming out with solution in all facets of life in Nigeria . And so the question of ruling for 50 years might even go above that because of what the PDP is doing."

The governor stressed that the PDP remains the best thing to happen to Nigerians since the party started ruling the country in 1999, a feat he said none of the opposition parties could match or fathom.

"PDP has kept Nigeria together from 1999 till today and Nigeria has moved in leaps and bounds. We may have some few hiccups here and there, even as a family people do have disagreement. If you look at the overall development of Nigeria you will see that Nigeria has moved farther than where we were in 1999.

"You see the peace prevailing, you have to know the circumstances when the PDP took over government - we came out from a very fractured and tortuous journey under the military administration and Nigerians were disillusioned with government.

"But PDP in the last ten years has brought hope, stabilised the government of Nigeria and Nigerians have started seeing the dividends of governance in all facets of life," he said.
