Three local business entities Pupkewitz, FNB and Puma have teamed up to sponsor the Annual Swakop Half Iron Triathlon Championship, which gets under way at Swakopmund under the auspices of Otb Sport on the 6th of December this year.
Defending champion and current South African Ultra athlete Nico Sterk is amongst several top international triathletes who have already indicated their participation at this year's event - that is expected to attract a record of more than 120 athletes.
A new route has been designed to make athletes stay in close proximity to the sea and the flexible team concept which allows up to four athletes to form a team with flying substitutions at all loop points in order to adjust to the team members' abilities.
According to a press release issued by the organizers, the focus on this year's event will mainly concentrate on introducing triathlon to both the specialist and recreational athletes by encouraging team participation and giving teams some sort of flexibility in the process.
Last year saw a significant number of local athletes making their presence felt with some breathtaking performances in the multi-discipline event.
Namibia's top athletes Reinholdt Iita, Beata Naigambo, Corinna Wahl and Quinton Delie are expected to hoist the Namibian flag high in their bid to challenge for top honours in the prestigious event.
The 112,9-kilometer Half Iron Triathlon will consist of a 1,9-kilometer swim, 90 kilometers of cycling and 21 kilometers of running. The race will start at the Mole and winds its way through the town before returning back to the Mole for conclusion. Entry fee is N$70 per team member and N$150 for individual athletes.
There are various prizes to the tune of N$20,000 and the first 100 entrants are to receive a Puma event T-shirt. Entry forms can be collected from Otb Sports shops at Wernhil, Craft Centre, Swakopmund and Oshakati.
