Somalia: Islamists in Kismayo Stop Trading At Prayer Time

23 October 2008

Kismayo — The Islamic administration in charge of the control of Kismayo town has banned making business during the Muslim prayers time.

Armed fighters from the Islamist administration in the town have entered and put up the shutters more business sites at the prayer times as reports say that several traders have been warned from opening their business locations at prayers occasions.

"While I was selling my shop, three armed men came to me and ordered me to shut the doors of my shop, I was given ultimatum of opening it" said trader woman Asha Yasin in Kismayo.

This decision appears to have taken into effect in the town seeing that the traders have put up with carrying out the Islamists orders.

"This administration will govern the town using laws of the Holy Koran," Islamist commander in the town told Shabelle.

In addition, they banned foreign music, romances between unmarried teens, all commerce and public transport during prayer times and decreed that Muslims who do not pray daily can be punished by death.

When in power in 2006, the Islamists carried out executions, shuttered cinemas and photo shops, banned live band music, flogged drug offenders and harassed civilians, mainly women, for failing to wear appropriate dress in public.
