Nigeria: CD Raises Alarm Over Missing Files

The controversy over the 'missing files' of 31 ex-governors has again raised fundamental questions about the suitability or otherwise of Mrs. Farida Waziri to head the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Campaign for Democracy (CD), said in Lagos yesterday.

Dr. Joe-Okei Odumakin, President, Campaign for Democracy (CD) said many patriotic Nigerians, including the CD had every reason to call to question the integrity of Waziri when she was nominated by President Yar'Adua to head the EFCC some five months ago.

"We had specifically accused her of standing surety for former Governor George Akume and that she was an associate of many corrupt ex-governors. But she went to lie before the Senate that she never stood as surety for Akume and she was cleared on false pretences. But till date, she has not controverted clear evidence that she signed to collect the passport of Akume from the EFCC," Odumankin said.

She further said that true to their suspicion, the ex-governors who facilitated her appointment with their close palling with President Yar'Adua are today going about as celebrities in our Country, the way the 419 kingpins were driving in convoys when Waziri was leading the Special Fraud Unit of the Police.

"Given Mrs Waziri's background, the role of the former governors in her appointment and the fact that shielding the former governors from justice is almost becoming the unwritten eight-point agenda of the present administration", the CD called on the National Assembly to institute a probe into the 'missing files' saga.

The probe, the CD President further said, should ascertain from Waziri's predecessors, Malam Nuhu Ribadu and Ibrahim Lamorde what was handed over to her and that Waziri be asked to produce the EFCC staff in custody of the files now said to have disappeared.

The Senate in particular owes Nigerians a duty in this regard because the cases against the ex-governors were presented before it, adding that corruption was killing our country by the day and that all patriotic Nigerians should not allow corruption to kill the 'war against it through its agents and fronts'.

"In decent climes, it does not even take this kind of probe we are calling for before a Waziri would know that her position is no longer tenable", the CD President added.
