Angola: Over Confidence About World Cup Weighed Against Country

Luanda — The chairman of the Angolan Football Federation (FAF), Justino Fernandes, recognised last Wednesday in Luanda that excessive confidence determined the premature elimination of the Angolan national senior males football team from the race to the 2010 World Cup, to happen in South Africa.

Speaking to ANGOP, on the fringes of the meeting between the Youths and Sport minister and the chairmen of the national

federations, Justino Fernandes said that it will be analysed the reasons that contributed to the elimination of the Angolan squad.

"I think we underestimated the adversaries after the holding of the draw of the preliminary round", he stressed, referring to the other teams that were in group 3 with Angola, namely Benin, Uganda and Niger.

Concerning the substitute of the former coach, Oliveira Gonçalves, who was sacked as the manager of the Angolan national team due to bad results, Justino Fernandes said that the new technical team will be announced at the end of October, however he was unwilling to give details about the name and nationality of the new coach.

He clarified that the caretaker coach, Mabi de Almeida, will continue managing the national team till the end of this year.

In December, according to Justino Fernando, Mabi de Almeida will coach the Angolan squad in the match against Zambia, qualifier for the African Cup of Nations for home based players, to be hosted by Ivory Coast in 2009, and also in the friendly matches set by FIFA.

Mabi de Almeida is the main coach of the national team after the match against Niger, held on 12 October in Luanda, in which Angola won the game by 3-1 for the last round of group stage, qualifier for the World Cup, to be hosted in South Africa in 2010.
