Ghana: Country to Experience Industrial Explosion

23 October 2008

Asuogyaman — The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Asuogyaman Constituency and also the Deputy Minister for Tourism and Diasporan Relations, Mr. Kofi Osei Ameyaw, has urged youth in the country, especially those within his constituency, to position themselves well, in order to take advantage of the industrial explosion, which is about to shake the country, under the vibrant leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

He made the remarks at the sod-cutting ceremony, to mark the official commencement of works on a modern museum and community centre, for the people of Akwamufie, in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region.

The project, which is funded by the government of Ghana, at an estimated cost of GH¢400,000, would be completed in 10 months.

According to Mr. Ameyaw, who is affectionately called Kofi Jesus by his teeming supporters, His Excellency President J. A. Kufour had laid the needed foundation that could propel this country to an enviable economic status in the near future.

He explained that in order to find solutions to the numerous unemployment problems in the country, there was the need for the youth to eschew laziness and any lukewarm attitude towards work, but rather be proactive to work, in order to give a new look to their standard of living.

"The government's effort to envisage a sound economic take off would be a mirage, when the youth, who are the next leaders of this great nation, lack the needed technical know-how and skills to execute such an agenda," he noted.

On this note, the Deputy Minister called on the youth to sharpen their skills, and climb higher on the academic ladder, which according to him, would enable them grab these opportunities.

He stressed that since the constitution allowed a president to rule the country for only two terms, President J. A. Kufuor would hand over the baton of leadership to Nana Akufo Addo, the flagbearer of the party, as the next president of the Republic of Ghana come January, 2009.

The Asuogyaman MP described Nana Akufo Addo as a selfless, unassuming, down-to-earth and forward looking leader, who has what it takes to propel Ghana to another economic height.

To this end, Mr. Ameyaw called on the electorate, to retain the NPP government in power, in order to continue with the good work of Mr. Kufour, since the NPP leadership had fulfilled its numerous promises made to the good people of Ghana.

Touching on the election, the MP advised the youth on the need to eschew activities that could lead to electoral violence. "Don't allow politicians to use you as instruments of violence, just to satisfy their parochial and selfish interests," he said.

The Adontenhene of Akwamufie, Nana Akowua, on his part, expressed his heart felt appreciation to President Kufuor and the MP, for facilitating the project in the area, and that it would help the inhabitants, especially the youth, in realising their unearthed talents, and also reduce the horrible poverty that had taken centre stage in the area.

Nana Akowua hinted that though the Akwamu used to be one of the powerful and respected states in ancient Ghana, it had lost its glory because of poverty and lack of infrastructural development.

He attributed the situation to the long standing chieftaincy dispute, which had been a source of worry, to hindering developmental agenda in the area.

He launched his passionate appeal to the chiefs and elders of the area, to stop this retrogressive attitude, since it held the tendency to destabilise the peace of the area, and the country as a whole.

He also called on the youth, especially the less privileged ones, to take advantage of the driving school, hair dressing and dress making institution, which had been set up by the MP, to offer free training and skills to residents in the constituency.
