Botswana: Khubamang Sends Pro-Boxers to SA

Boitumelo Khutsafalo

23 October 2008

Two professional boxers from Thuso Khubamang's stable leave today to fight in South Africa tomorrow.

The promoter said yesterday that Dintwa Sloca and Seroba Binda will be in the ring against South African opponents. While Sloca will be battling Tumi Selebi, Binda will fight against Alfred Mnethi. These are undercut bouts in the contest for the vacant South African featherweight national title at Driefontein Boxing Arena in Carletonville. The main fight will be a 12-round slugfest between South Africa boxers, Leli Mabilase and Thando Vukuza.

This will be the second time in as many months for Khubamang, a former professional fighter to send local boxers to fight in South Africa. Last month, his Scud Missile Promotions company took flyweight Peter Phelane to fight in South Africa.

The Botswana boxer lost in a split points decision to a South African, Matswake Moselesele.

Khubamang said that although the invitations for tomorrow's fights only came last week, the boxers have been in intensive preparations all along and therefore they will be more than ready for the bouts.

He added that besides the two fights tomorrow, both Sloca and Binda have been preparing for World Boxing Foundation (WBF) title fights to be held in Botswana for the first time. Khubamang explained that they have not yet decided on the dates for the WBF fights as they are still working on some things including live coverage by Botswana Television.

He said that his aim is to see professional boxing developing in the country. He promised to work hard to achieve his dreams.

Khubamang said that another professional boxer, Lesley Sekotswe will defend his African Boxing Union super flyweight title on October 31 against South Africa's Nkosana Sobethu. Sekotswe won the title two months ago. Khubamang said that it is just a matter of time before the South African-based Sekotswe fights for a world title.

The boxer has taken unpaid leave from his teaching job.

If things go well, Khubamang said he might quit teaching to concentrate on boxing. Sekotswe is currently based in South Africa.
