Angola: 35,000 Police Officers to Be Deployed for CAN2010

Luanda — At least 35,000 police officers will be deployed to provide security during the African Football Cup of Nations (CAN) Angola will host in its provinces of Luanda, Cabinda, Benguela and Huila in 2010.

The information was supplied Thursday to Angop by the director for security of the Organising Committee, Joaquim Ribeiro.

The officer who is also Luanda's provincial commander of the National Police, explained that prior estimates indicated the deployment of 25,000 officers, a figure that was later risen to 10,000 more, following a study.

Joaquim Ribeiro said specific training programmes are in progress locally, while some officers will attend upgrading courses abroad.

He also spoke of an experience exchange programme involving counterparts from some countries like South Africa, France, Germany and Portugal.

The officer said he will attend a meeting of the International Police (Interpol), on October 28-30, in France, whose programme will also focus on protection of sporting events.

He announced that exercises will be carried out in the second quarter of 2009, for an assessment of the staff's level of preparedness.
