Africa: Angola Boosts Peace and Security in Central Africa

New York — The government of Angola will continue encouraging other central African states to make efforts in order to maintain peace and security in this region, guaranteed this Saturday, in New York, the Angolan ambassador to the UN, Ismael Gaspar Martins.

Angola's permanent representative to the United Nations was speaking during a meeting of this international organisation's first commission (designed for issues on disarming and international security), under the 63rd session of the general assembly.

Ismael Martins urged other countries of the region to work towards preventing likely conflicts.

Angola chairs, since last May, the permanent consultative committee of the UN for issues on disarming the Central African region, after having hosted in Luanda, from October 13 to 15, the 27th meeting of this forum.

In his speech on the application of measures for the promotion of the trust in the region, the ambassador explained that Angola shall continue, until the end of its mandate, encouraging other countries to curb any threat to peace, stability and security in the sub-region.

The ambassador also reminded that the meeting equally recommended the adoption of proper measures to combat the proliferation of small firearms and light weapons and disarming citizens under the illegal possession of firearms.

The committee meets twice a year. The 28th meeting shall be held from next December 08 to 12, in Libreville, capital of Gabon, in which Angola will hand over the presidency to the host country.
